I am Chloé and I am a student at London College of Fashion. I am originally from Maastricht, a small city in the Netherlands but I’ve been living in London (Shoreditch) for the last 4 years and I love it because the city is so vibrant and changing every day. What I love most about London is the combination of fashion, art and people.
Since, 1.5 year I have been working at luxury shoe brand called Nicholas Kirkwood. The office is based in Soho, so I am spending a lot of time in this area too. I think it’s fascinating because in Soho you can find a luxury shop next to a sex shop next to a cute coffee place. That’s why I like it so much.
What is a typical breakfast and where would you go?
For a good breakfast I would go to Gloria. The place is very cute inside and brightens up my morning. The best thing on the menu is their French toast as well as their truffle scrambled eggs!
My favourite place in Notting Hill is called Eggbreak. This is a perfect stop when you are visiting the colourful houses in this area.
Where is your favourite place to grab lunch?
I love this Taiwanese restaurant in Soho called Bao. They serve the best steamed buns. If you want a sandwich for lunch I would go to Visions in Shoreditch. (the salmon & spicy chicken are my faves). Another place I like for dumplings is The Orient.
What is the ideal afternoon activity in a city like London
I love visiting museums and London is the best place for that. My favourite museums are: V&A, Saatchi Gallary, Tate Modern, White Cube, Newport Gallery. Next to that, I like to visit vintage stores and discover new shops in East London that offer second-hand furniture.
Where are the best places for dinner?
Oh god, there are so many good places.
I really like Dishoom for Indian food even though it’s hard to secure a place for dinner. A more expensive Indian restaurant that I LOVE is Bombay Brasserie in Kensington. If you want to eat Italian, I like Via Emelia and Gloria. For sushi, Sticks n’ Sushi , Chotto Matte and Temakinho are the best places.
In the evening, what is the city like and where do you find yourself?
At the weekend, I usually go out for dinner and drinks afterwards. For a cocktail & chill I recommend TT Liquor & Happiness Forgets. Another nice bar is Ruby’s in Dalston, in one room you can sit and in the other room you can dance.
I personally really like karaoke and that’s why I recommend going to Karaoke Hole. This is a karaoke bar hosted by drag queens.
In a busy city like London, is there anywhere to chill?
Yes, there is! On a sunny day I love to go to the canal in East London. It doesn’t feel like you are in London at all and you’ll only be surrounded by locals.
What is there to do for something fun and different?
Something fun to do in London is this immersive cinema experience called ‘secret cinema’. In this cinema you’re stepping in the world of movies/series and you have to be dressed up as your favourite character. This is a lot of fun with a group of friends.
If you want something different for dinner, I recommend going to Tayyaps. This restaurant doesn’t serve alcohol so you can BYOB (bring your own bottle). This is perfect if you want to go out afterwards and drink a lot without paying too much money for alcohol.
Where is the best place to stay/sleep for young travellers?
I always recommend staying in Shoreditch because it’s much nicer than staying in the touristy busy centre. Shoreditch is still close to Oxford Circus and Soho and it’s easy to commute by tube. In this area there are some nice hotels, I suggest Ace Hotel, Nobu, The Hoxton and Shoreditch house (these can be expensive though) You can also find good Airbnb’s for a relatively lower price.
What season would you recommend visiting?
I think May/June is the best period to visit London. When there’s a bit of sunshine everyone starts going out to parks and markets and it makes you feel very happy. I would also recommend going to London before Christmas (November/December) because the city is beautifully decorated with Christmas lights and the department stores are soo pretty, and then there’s also Winter Wonderland which brings the ultimate Christmas feeling!
Is London best for a family holiday/friends holiday or couple holiday?
I would say all of them. London has a lot of different things to do for young and old people. With your family you could visit several museums and have nice dinners. For a friend’s holiday London is the best place to have fun and go out. From fancy clubs in Mayfair to hipster to drag queen karaoke bars in Dalston.
