Hey! I’m Danielle (@scratchyourmapa). Born in Long Island and raised in New Jersey. I currently work on a cruise ship traveling the world alongside working on my personal travel website and free-lance photography which you can find here.
What is a typical breakfast and where would you go?
New York is world known for its bagels. The secret? Nothing more than mother nature. The water used in New York gives the bagels a very unique flavour that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. They have hands down the best bagels in the country, and you can get all different flavours of the bagel itself as well as different cream cheese spreads.
Pretty much anywhere you go you can find a great bagel. Just make sure to not get them from the street nor the big chains (like Dunkin’ Donuts or Starbucks).
Where is your favourite place to grab lunch?
New Yorkers usually don’t get a lot of time off for lunch, so a great place is Urban Space, where you can find various kiosks with different cuisines. The food is fast but doesn’t lack in quality. You can get anything from a burger to a sushi burrito (which we highly recommend).
What is the ideal afternoon activity in a city like New York City
One of NYC’s best features is Central Park. This green area is huge and full of things to do. In the summer you can go nearby the lake, rent a boat or even do a picnic. In the winter, you can go ice-skating, and year-round it’s great just to walk around and enjoy the fresh air with the view of the skyscrapers in the back.
Where are the best places for dinner?
The great thing about New York is that you can find any kind of cuisine! My personal favourite is Italian, and there is no better place than heading down to Little Italy for this. At any of the restaurants you can really find great food, but I love the pizza from Rubirosa.
In the evening, what is the city like and where do you find yourself?
Something we know about NYC is that it’s a city that never sleeps! It looks so beautiful when it’s lit up, so it’s picturesque at any time, but particularly at night. I love to head to places to admire the skyline and have a drink in areas such as Brooklyn or Hoboken.
In a busy city like New York City, is there anywhere to chill?
Parks in New York are great places for that. I already mentioned Central Park as one of them, but I also like Astoria Park and Bryant Park. In the summer, you can watch movies for free in the last one.
What is there to do for something fun and different?
There’s a lot going on in New York. You can go to any Paint & Sip, an activity where you drink wine while you have fun painting in an empty canvas. You can also go to Colour Factory, a museum full of colourful exhibits.
Where is the best area to stay/sleep for young travellers?
Manhattan can be pretty expensive. Since the subway network is huge, I suggest staying in one of the surrounding Burroughs like Queens or Brooklyn.
What season would you recommend visiting?
There’s always something going on, but if I had to choose one I’d go with winter as there’s a magical vibe around the holidays.
Is New York best for a family holiday/friends holiday or couple holiday?
Tough question. Although New York is an extremely romantic city, it’s a great place to visit with friends as there’s so many fun activities that you can truly enjoy with a group of people.
