I discovered my passion for travel when I moved to London about 5 years ago, where I realised just how easy it is to jump on a bus, train or plane and explore new places across the globe. Quickly, I created my Stars’ map – a place where I could save all of my favourite places worldwide. Ever since, I was known as ‘the girl who knows the best spots in town’ and everyone who knew and didn’t know me, just kept asking for recommendations (even for places I’ve never visited).
My original dream was to share my recommendations with you guys, but I was lucky enough to be surrounded by the most amazing co-founders & contributors who brought to life ideas beyond my wildest dreams.
Welcome home strangers - we all hope you will enjoy taking this journey with us.
Hey! Mariana here, all the way from Portugal to London, life turned upside-down from a small decision about taking a one-way flight. Having gone from the bohemian life of an artist studying Fine Arts in Lisbon to the busy working bee life, trying to catch a breath through the bustling world of Fashion press and media. She says to herself: couldn’t be happier. While not running around the city (favourite pastime), you can find me doing one of these three: losing myself on a book at home - please do not find me there; eating my way through town - give me ‘everything’ tapas and a glass of wine on the side or window shopping - I call it personal research.
I’m Nicole Deslandes and I’m a writer for Don’t Be A Stranger! I grew up in a little bit of a grey area between South London and Surrey, meaning I quite often switch up being in a bar in Brixton to a cosy country pub. Ever since I got an Oyster card as a teenager I found myself gravitating more towards the city with my friends. I love the buzz, being around trendy Londoners and the fact that there is always something new to discover.
I’m definitely a beach baby at heart, I grew up mainly only going on beach holidays all along the Mediterranean. However, I knew as soon as I left school that the first thing I was going to do was work really hard, save up and venture out of Europe and travel as much as I could. Ever since, I’ve been around North American cities from New York, Toronto and Chicago to Vancouver, Seattle and LA! I’ve made some footsteps around Asia, seeing cultural must-dos like Angkor Wat to travelling around Japan, South Korea and all the travel hot spots like Bali, Thailand and Cambodia. I love Europe and I feel lucky to be able to go on city breaks like Amsterdam and try out amazing pasta in Sicily as well.
I grew up near valleys and mountains and moved to the big city, but not to enjoy it, rather to learn computer science. When I’m not developing I swim or play any “Blizzard” game that’s available. Ever since I was a child I loved traveling around the world, exploring, learning and enjoying what it has to offer.
City: New York
Wishlist: Japan, Hong Kong, South Africa, Argentina, Hawaii, Australia
The first thing I do when I arrive at a new place is to find out where’s what with the locals.
Fav place: New York
Hey! My name is Laura, I'm an architecture student, freelance illustrator and sometimes a bit of a blogger(ish). Whilst travelling, you’ll find me with a film camera strapped round my neck babbling whatever I have managed to learn of the local language at underground galleries, coffee shops and vintage stores.
My name is Esmé and I’m a 21 year old student living in Madrid for my university Year Abroad. My main interests are literature, photography and travelling, and having lived abroad my whole life I’ve definitely caught the travel bug from a young age… I am always planning my next trip whether it is a city break within Spain or a backpacking trip round South America! I am always on the hunt for the latest art exhibitions in my favourite cities, and at home I split my time between living in the UK and Holland, so between London and Amsterdam I definitely get my fix of art, culture and delicious food!
Hi! I’m Andy, from Hong Kong to London. Although I really love my city, education and work brought me here and I always make the most of it, wherever, whenever. Some of my interests lie in gaming, fin-tech, traveling apps and VR. I love creating new things that is why I became a UX designer, amongst other reasons, to help people find better solutions in the most creative ways.
Hey! My name is Gilad, I'm a computer/ neuro science and philosophy student, in my free time I also enjoy sports, making and listening to music and traveling. Whilst traveling, I usually enjoy delving into the local culture, history and architecture. Best trip to date was my visit to Peru and Cusco in particular- the language, the view and the people were all amazing, can’t wait to come back!
Hi! It’s taken me the longest to write this even though I had access to everyone else’s. Originally from a small town in North India, I went to boarding school in the valleys of Uttarakhand and now luckily a Computer Science student in London. My love for travel originated from these compulsory treks and camping trips we had in school. Ever since then, it’s been a constant want to travel everywhere.
Originally from the seaside village of Braunton in North Devon I have grown up with a passion for all things travel, food and wine. After graduating with a BA in History and Ancient History from the University of Exeter I have spent my first year and a half of graduate life pursuing these great loves. This has taken me across the world to New Zealand, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Australia, Berlin and Seville. I love a good long walk to explore and when I am not reading a fictional book for pleasure, you can often find me reading the reviews of local restaurants to get ahead of the game. I am never without a recommendation of where to grab a bite to eat or a cheap glass of wine!
My name is Ben and I’m a 20-year-old business student living in London for the better part of three years now. I have a knack for lists in any way shape or form so it is not unlikely that on any given day you might find me with a to-do list in my pocket, be it for exploring new places or day-to-day errands. I’m into skating, surfing (including Couchsurfing), and boxing but can also be quite the clock watcher if I don’t keep myself active. I adore dynamic cities with big displays and small crevices but would also never discriminate against a beach holiday!
*sets down wine* Hi, I’m Gavi and I’m from Princeton, New Jersey. At the risk of sounding painfully cliché, I studied abroad in college and it “totally changed my life” (cue the eye roll). After a college semester abroad in London just wasn’t enough for me, I decided to move back across the pond permanently after graduation where I am now getting my masters in Fashion Media and Communication. I’ve had a passion for traveling since I was a little girl tagging along on my dad’s business trips around the world and now, thanks to cheap flights on EasyJet and friends who share my unabated wanderlust, I just can’t get enough! When I’m not catching flights, you can find me wandering around London with my camera, holed up in vintage stores on Brick Lane, or on the hunt for New York quality pizza in London (still in progress).
Hey, I’m Phillip - I’m a Graphic Designer, and I tend to put a lot of my time into making weird fonts and animations. I’m glad to be part of something travel-focused, I believe that solo travel is beneficial to building independence, learning about yourself and gaining great stories to tell. I’m all about creativity and art in all forms - film, music, cooking... I try to see small venue gigs in London as often as I can.
Hey I’m Zuzana! I am originally from Slovakia, currently studying Comparative Literature at UCL, and working towards finding my creative niche and becoming a journalist (one day).
I am lucky enough to share my passion for exploring the world with my family, with which I have been travelling ever since I can remember. Super skills? I am very good at packing, getting acquainted with new places and finding artsy spots, bookshops and good coffee. I enjoy shooting on film, reading in cafés and wandering through cities aimlessly.
Hi I am Alex, I am a Graphic Designer and Illustrator from London who graduated from Bath School of Art and Design. I love being out and about experiencing new things, so it’s great to be apart of a project that promotes that. On the side I love to paint, create t-shirts and ping a ball around.
