Diaries of a Wannabe Vegan in London

Growing up in a vegetarian household meant that unlike most American children, my childhood consisted largely of tofu, soy milk and tempeh. While I did eventually start eating meat (sorry mom and dad), I’ve always held an appreciation for vegan and vegetarian cooking and clean eating. Seeing what creative, inventive and innovative plant-based things people can concoct is something I think even the most carnivorous eaters can appreciate.

As the vegan restaurant explosion in London continues, it can be hard to navigate the abundance of vegan hotspots worth visiting. I hope this list of my picks for where to get the best vegan food in London can inspire you to make Veganuary last all year (or at least try)!

If You’re Looking for a Curry

Spice Box
Best for: Indian, brunch | Walthamstow | £ | @eatspicebox

With a delicious balance of style and taste, Spice Box is so much more than just a trendy vegan restaurant. If you’re visiting for dinner, try the sharing street bite tiffin for two and gasp in awe as each layer is lifted to reveal a new delicious dish.

Healthy Wealthy Vegan
Best for: curry, delivery | Islington | ££ | @healthywealthyindianvegan

Healthy Wealthy Vegan is a locally cherished restaurant serving some amazing curries and delicious desserts. They pride themselves on crafting their delicious dishes using only sustainable and socially responsibly sourced ingredients. They change which curries they offer on a daily basis so you’ll always find new flavours to explore. It’s worth noting that while the food is incredible the vibes aren’t the best, making this ideal for indulging in a takeaway curry!

If You’re Craving Junk Food

Biffs Jack Shack
Best for: vegan junk food, wings | multiple locations | £ | @biffs_uk

Starting out as an actual shack, Biffs Jack Shack grew to fame for their jackfruit burgers, priding themselves on creating that “oh my god I can’t believe that’s vegan” moment. I had my meat-loving boyfriend try one of their burgers and wings and he said that while it definitely doesn’t try tasting like meat, it’s still really delicious in its own way. We both agree this is a must try even if you’re not living that plant-based life.

Best for: burgers, trendy eaters | Shoreditch | ££ | @mooshieslondon

Founded in 2016, Mooshies on Brick Lane is the perfect spot to satisfy your plant-based junk food cravings. Come for the good food and stay for the good vibes. If you’re feeling indulgent try the magic mushroom burger and chocolate milkshake.

Sutton and Sons
Best for: fish and chips | multiple locations | £ | @suttonandsonsvegan

While this is not a fully vegan establishment, Sutton and Sons fish and chips shops all have an extensive vegan menu featuring favourites like scampi, fish, steak and ale pie, sausages and burgers. Perfect for outings with your non-vegan pals, this place will make everyone in your group happy.

If You’re Looking for a Little Bit of Everything

Best for: global cuisine, trendy eaters | Shoreditch | ££ | @eatgenesis

With a menu inspired by foods around the world, this upmarket trendy vegan spot in Shoreditch is perfect for vegans “eating for the gram”. Navigating the extensive menu here can be difficult, some of my personal favourites are the Yucatan Street Bowl and the Banh Mi Dog. Don’t leave without trying one of their organic cocktails.

by CHLOE.
Best for: salads, burgers, baked goods | multiple locations | £ | @eatbychloeuk

I’ve been a huge fan of by CHLOE. since it opened in New York in 2015 so I was thrilled to see it finally come to London in 2018. Some of my personal favourites include the mac and cheese and the pesto meatball sandwich. Don’t leave without trying the beet ketchup and chipotle mayo on tap, best paired with some delicious sweet potato fries.

Wild Food Cafe
Best for: raw food, healthy food | multiple locations | ££ | @wildfoodcafe

Up there on the Instagrammable list of vegan spots, Wild Food focuses not only on plant based foods but also sustainability and wellness. Wild Food also prides itself on being a community, regularly hosting mindfulness events and cooking classes. The menu features a lot of raw dishes as well as a vegan take on classics like pizza and burgers. Some of my favourites here include the Wabi Sabi salad and Banana Bread Toast!

Best for: vegan coffee shop, baked goods  | Islington | ££ | @we_are_vegan_everything

This Bali inspired vegan cafe comes from the founders of popular vegan bakery Cupcakes and Shhht. It’s name stands for “We Are Vegan Everything” and they mean it! With menu items ranging from milkshakes to smoked salmon cream cheese bagels and really good coffee, you’re sure to leave satisfied. WAVE also bakes stunning vegan cakes for all occasions.
