A Day in Bangkok with Milky

June 8, 2020

Hi, I’m Milky (@miluki) and I’m from Bangkok. I’ve been abroad and lived in London, but in total I have lived in Bangkok for 7 years. I love living here because you can travel easily anywhere you want to. Also, there are loads of cool places to hang out and eat at.

What is a typical breakfast and where would you go?

My typical Thai breakfast is “Joke”: A Thai congee typically served with pork and eggs. It’s light and also, very easy to find from street restaurants. My to-go places are: Joke Samyan at Chula Soi 11 and Joke Prince in Bang-Rak.

If I want more of a brunch, I’ll go to either Roast, Toby’s, Broccoli Revolution (Vegan, several branches) or Tiny Cup Café.

Favourite place to grab lunch?

Greyhound café is my favourite place to go to, they serve really good Thai contemporary food. There are several branches around Bangkok as well so there isn’t ever one too far away. Otherwise, I’d get some street food in the Bank-Rak district (Charoen Krung Road).

What is the ideal afternoon activity in a city like Bangkok ?

If you’re okay with the heat, Chatuchak Weekend Market (biggest market in the world) is a must-do. You can find everything (literally, everything!) from plants to artisan pieces with affordable price tags.

I also like to do some cafe hopping at pretty cafes such as Wallflowers Cafe, After You (a dessert café) and Fucheer by Lukkaithong

In most countries of South East Asia, department stores are the centre of social lifestyles. There’s loads to do, and also people like being in the air-conditioned indoors to avoid hot weather. Top department stores to visit are: Paragon, ICON Siam and EmQuatier.

Where are the best places for dinner?

Firstly, I would recommend getting some night street food at Yaowarat Street (China Town). Otherwise, there are plenty of casual restaurants along Chapreya River (Tha-Tien Pier, Phra Arthit Pier, Maharaj Pier)

For a nice sit-down meal, two places I love to go to are Le Du and Gaggan.

In the evening, what is the city like and where do you find yourself?

The city becomes really fun and lively in the evening because Thai people start to hangout more than in the afternoon as it is nice and cool. Take a walk along Chao Phraya River and around the Band-Rak or Asiatique areas. Art Box Market is a really pretty, contemporary outdoor market, lit with fairy lights and plenty of stalls to grab food and drink. If you wanna have more fun though, there are plenty of bars and clubs in Thonglor and Ekkamai are.

Ratchadamri

In a busy city like Bangkok, is there anywhere to chill?

Rooftop bars in Bangkok are like little oasis’s and are a lovely escape from the buzz of Bangkok. Some of my favourites are at the Sala Rattanakosin hotel, CHAR Bangkok, Octave and Vertigo

Siam Design Hotel

What is there to do for something fun and different?

Just a little outside the city, the Floating market (Damnoen Saduak), is a really unique experience. Also, the Long-tailed boat trips along the canals are full of picture opportunities. Paintbar Café is a cute café where you can sit and paint canvas’ whilst enjoying a drink. Also, art galleries such as BACC and Serindia Gallery present plenty of local and global artwork that are worth taking a look at.

Where is the best area to stay/sleep for young travellers?

Areas I recommend staying in are Victory Monument, Thonglor, Ratchathewi station or Tha-tien

However, specifically there are a couple of really stylish hostels called Mustang Nero and Mustang Blu that adorn beautiful, artistic interiors.

What season would you recommend visiting?

The loveliest and most pleasant weather is in October to February. This is before it gets too hot, however, it’s peak season so the hotels are usually more expensive. So, if you like the heat, visit in the summer months (March to May). Try and avoid the rainy season (Mid-May to October) because the rain is heavy and will affect your trip, (Hotels will be cheap though).

Is Bangkok best for a family holiday/friends holiday or a couples holiday?

All types of holiday suit Bangkok, to be honest, because Bangkok has a variety of all sorts of activities that can work for anyone.
