Maria is an experienced world-traveller whom I met during my architecture studies in Paris. Not only is she a language wiz (she can speak countless languages), but also an incredibly interesting human being, with many stories to tell from all her world adventures.
We sat down with her to discuss what a typical day in her hometown, Nicosia, looks like.
Nicosia is a city separated in two sides, the Greek and the Turkish-occupied side. I live in the greek side so I will present you my daily habits on this side of the city.
I love having the hummus salad at Silver Pot for lunch, as well as the trahana soup during winter time, it’s a lovely little nest with homemade delicious food.
In the afternoon I enjoy walking around the old town in the districts of Ledras and Onasagorou, maybe eating a rose-flavoured ice-cream from Heracles or stopping for a coffee at Kala Kathoumena or The Gym. I like walking around the old church of Faneromeni. In the old town I find interesting and noticeable the mixture of Orthodox churches and Mosques as well as the effect and characteristics of the two cultures within the area. Sometimes I may walk even further towards the picturesque neighbourhood of Famagusta Gate. The area there consists of a mix of old and renovated houses many of which are now occupied by little boutiques. I particularly like to walk around Ermou Street where I can find some shops to visit and artists’ studios to lazily observe.
If it’s too hot for a walk under the sun, I choose to spend my afternoon in Athalassa park under the Eucalyptus trees (Gum trees), maybe enjoying a homemade mint lemonade from the park’s little cantine.
I LOVE pizza at Da Paolo on their little veranda in the old town. If I want something more casual and current, a tavern is always a good idea. There, you may enjoy a variety of grilled meat and mezedes, surrounded by locals, most of the time, in a pretty simplistic environment. Some other tavernswhich I like are: I Stoa tou Dimitri, Takis kai Pampos and Loxandra.
In the evening we mostly find ourselves in an outdoor bar for a cocktail or a beer. There are many little bars that I like: New Devision an old house reformed into a big bar with benches in the garden and a billiard space upstairs. Lost and Found a fancy cocktail bar ranked as one of the best 50 bars in the world. The gym is an reformed old house again this time in the old town area, with a cozy atmosphere ideal for a meet-up with friends.
